COMPREHENSION
Characters which carried out unpleasant deeds
Antonio: A Christian who hated Jews. He insulted Shylock incessantly, calling him all sorts of names such as dog and cur, which are not at all pleasing to our ears, and certainly tarnished our previous impression of Antonio. He has got his bad side as well. He almost paid the ultimate price for sealing his bond with Shylock, which was sparked off by the fact that Antonio refused to pay Shylock interest and practiced lending money gratis, which affected Shylock’s usury business.
Solanio: A friend of Salerio, Bassanio, Gratiano and Antonio. He loved to call Shylock names just like Antonio. When Shylock grieved over the loss of his precious daughter, Jessica and his ducats, Solanio did not console Shylock but piled on his misery by mocking his loss. He also described Shylock’s outcry as ‘strange, outrageous and variable’, which evoked sympathy for Shylock who was the target of racialism in the largely Christian Venetian society.
Shylock: A Jew who indulged in usury and was prejudiced against by the anti-Semitic community. He was a villain, who could easily be overwhelmed by anger and the thought of seeking for revenge. He introduced a special bond which Antonio has to agree to after borrowing Shylock’s ducats, which was to cut off an equivalent pound of his flesh, showing his cunning nature. He obviously wanted Antonio to die, given that the latter insulted him and disrupted his usury business. He was overjoyed to hear the news from the Rialto that one of Antonio’s ships was wrecked along the English Channel and wanted to take full advantage of the situation by instructing Tubal to arrest Antonio if he were to fail to return him the money before the stipulated date. This act of seeking for revenge was more important than the loss of his daughter for Shylock, which portrayed him as a vicious person whose priority is vengeance.
Shakespeare’s intentions of writing The Merchant of Venice
Shakespeare wanted to let the readers know about the racialism which was present during the Elizabethan Era in the anti-Semitic Venetian society. In The Merchant of Venice, Shylock was being constantly insulted by the Christians. Another example of such a phenomenon is that even though Jessica had converted into a Christian and married Lorenzo, Christians such as Portia and Bassanio still treated her with a certain degree of suspicion. Shakespeare also hoped to convey Christian teachings through the inscriptions on Portia’s three caskets such as “Who chooseth me shall gain what many men desire” and “Who chooseth me shall get as much as he deserves”, with those caskets being the wrong choices, which means that desire is an unreliable guide and should be resisted, and the fact that human beings do not deserve God’s grace, but rather receive it in spite of themselves.
Description of first illustration in The Merchant of Venice
The first illustration of the book is on Page 20, and It shows Antonio shaking hands with Bassanio. Antonio and Bassanio were very good friends. Bassanio needed money in order to travel to Belmont to woo Portia, and he approached Antonio for the sum of money. However, Antonio’s fortunes were all tied up on the goods on argosies travelling to different parts of the world, and therefore did not have ready money to lend Antonio. To avoid disappointing his dear friend, Antonio allowed Bassanio to use his reputation in Venice to borrow money from usurers and even said that “My purse, my person, my extremest means lie all unlocked to your occasions.” The illustration showed that Bassanio could confide in Antonio in acquiring the sum of money, meaning they had a very close relationship.
APPLICATION
Main character visiting our classroom
If Launcelot Gobbo were to visit our classroom, he would most probably be telling us jokes to cheer us up if he thinks that the atmosphere is not filled with joy. Launcelot is basically a fun-loving, optimistic, jovial person and this can be seen by the fact that he and his father, Old Gobbo, came up with a comical double act in Act 2 Scene 2 of the Merchant of Venice. If we were to ask him questions about the novel, he would probably explain to us in-depth of his sufferings in Shylock’s household, and the fact that Jessica was the only one who treated him as a close friend. He could also explain to us about whether Shylock really deserved his punishment in the end, and the different treatments he had received during the tenure when he was Shylock’s and Bassanio’s servant.
Reaction to a particular situation in The Merchant of Venice
If I were Bassanio and heard about Antonio’s possible impending death, I would have done the same as Bassanio in the Merchant of Venice and immediately leave for Venice, regardless of whatever important matters I have at hand. Antonio is my friend and despite the fact that he did not have enough money to lend me, he offered to do as much as he could and granted me permission to use his credits to borrow money in Venice. Even though the Jewish usurer Shylock proposed Antonio to seal a bond to borrow three thousand ducats for me, which was to cut off his pound of flesh if he fails to return Shylock the money before the stipulated date, Antonio agreed to seal the bond and risk his life, just for my sake. Of course as his friend, I have to rush back to ensure his safety, if not I will forever be haunted by pangs of guilt, in the case whereby something adverse happens to Antonio.
Lesson learnt from story
After reading The Merchant of Venice, I have learnt about the value of true friendship, in the case of Antonio and Bassanio, who were able to stick through thick and thin. In the end, Bassanio saved Antonio’s life from Shylock’s devil and they reunited. Besides the value of friendship, I have also learnt about the fact that no one is perfect. Shakespeare’s portrayal of characters showed that all of them had two ‘faces’ and could become very different persons at different times when interacting with different people. For example, Portia is very smart and saved Antonio from the brink of death by stating the fact that the bond did not allow a single drop of blood when Shylock removes Antonio’s pound of flesh. However, she has got her bad side too. She was a racist and her colour-prejudice was evident after the Prince of Morocco left, by saying that he failed the casket test because he was dark and therefore was destined to fail, in the sentence “Let all of his complexion choose me so.” Therefore, all characters in the Merchant of Venice are both good and bad, and none of them is to be considered an example to follow in all aspects. Lastly, I learnt that once a person is intent on seeking revenge, it is hard to dissuade him. In the case of Shylock, he was constantly insulted by the Christian community and therefore demanded Antonio’s pound of flesh just to feed his revenge. No one including the Duke could dissuade him from doing this, and in the end it was the intelligence of Portia which prevented the tragedy.
ANALYSIS
One word that describes a character
Evil – Shylock
1. He could not set aside his grudge for Antonio.
2. He purposely wanted Antonio’s pound of flesh as bond when he lent Antonio three thousand ducats.
3. He cursed at her daughter, Jessica after her elopement with Christian Lorenzo.
4. He abused Launcelot while the latter was his servant.
5. When he heard that Antonio’s ventures had not gone well, he was sadistic and said he would be glad to torture and plague Antonio.
Different ending to the book
Shylock’s dignity was restored even after all of his fortunes were forfeited after the trial, and he remained a Jew. The people of Venice started to respect the Jewish minority and stopped discriminating against them ever again. Even though Shylock crafted such a wicked idea to claim Antonio’s life, the fact that it was Antonio himself who provided Shylock the idea of this plan meant that it was not entirely Shylock’s devil. Shylock should not be forced to become a Christian because if Shylock’s coercion for Antonio’s pound of flesh was wrong, then Antonio’s coercion for Shylock’s conversion to Christianity would be wrong too, thus it is up to Shylock’s choice if he wanted to become a Christian or remain a Jew. Lastly, prejudice and discrimination against a race should not be encouraged, and I hope to change the ending to make it morally right, as the Venetian community had changed for the better.
Main idea of the book
I believe that the main idea of this book is the quality of hatred as a cyclical phenomenon. Throughout the play, the sole excuse Shylock had come up with to support his plan was that he was simply applying the lessons taught to him by the Christians. His act of revenge seemed to be driven by the fact that Antonio, Salerio and Solanio all insulted him by calling him names and not only that, but the entire Jewish community in Venice. As the play continues, Shylock unveiled more and more of his reasoning which was actually the same idea of Christians insulting him, the most famous phrase being “Hath not a Jew eyes? Hath not a Jew hands, organs, dimensions, senses, affections, passions?” It shows that the Jews did not deserve such insults because they were human and had feelings too. Shylock knew he had no use of Antonio’s pound of flesh, but still wanted it, the reason being “The villainy you teach me I will execute, and it shall go hard but I will better the instruction”. Afterwards, Shylock was spared his life and the injustice was effectively ended.
SYNTHESIS
Parts I would change in the story
I would remove certain comments made by Salerio and Solanio about Shylock, because I regard that kind of language as obscene. I would limit the use of such words in a scene, for example, to at most three, because making those words appear 3 times should be enough to present the idea of Shylock being humiliated in Venice by Venetians. Secondly, I would remove or cut short Act 3 Scene 5 of the book because it served almost no purpose and it was added so as to allow Portia and Nerissa sufficient time for their costume change, therefore I regard that scene as redundant in the understanding of the novel. Lastly, I would edit the part where Shylock was forced to convert to Christianity because if he were to forced to do it, but not willingly do it, it will only add to his anger and hatred towards the Christian community. Laws in Venice also state that it is not appropriate to force someone to convert into another religion, therefore I would edit that part of the book and just let Shylock surrender his wealth, not convert to Christianity.
Poem :)
Shylock isn’t really that bad,
The funny guy is Launcelot’s dad.
Antonio is just too passive,
Bassanio in contrast is assertive.
Portia commented Morocco’s dark,
Arragon failed to leave a mark.
Lorenzo loverbirds had eloped,
Then was Shylock enveloped,
By thoughts of hatred,
Which gradually bred.
How horrible can hatred be,
That it nearly resulted in a killing spree!
Climax of the story
I believe that the climax of the story is the trial scene, where news arrived that Antonio’s ventures did not go well and failed to return the three thousand ducats he had borrowed from him. Bassanio and Gratiano rushed back to Venice to help Antonio and offered many times the value which Antonio owed Shylock. However, Shylock was purely seeking for revenge and rejected any value that they offered; he only wanted Antonio dead. Then, Portia, disguised as a lawyer, arrived at the trial scene. She wanted Shylock to show mercy and spared Antonio, but Shylock refused. After that, Portia displayed her wit by requesting that Shylock remove Antonio’s pound of flesh without spilling a single drop of blood, which was impossible. This scene showed Portia’s intelligence, Shylock’s punishment as well as Antonio’s release from the contract.
EVALUATION
The character as my friend
I would certainly choose Antonio as my friend because in the Merchant of Venice, he was a selfless person who had the courage to go to lengths to help his friend, Bassanio, who was in urgent need. In the process, he was willing to agree to having his pound of flesh as a bond in the contract. He may be killed if he failed to return the money on time, therefore I believe that he is the person whom I can confide in.
The title of the play
I think the title of the play is a bad one because it is boring and not captivating, thus it would fail to attract the attention of the readers. It also does not provide much clue about the plot in the play, therefore it does not spark off any interest.
Saving a character from a disaster
I would choose to save Antonio from a disaster if he encounters one because he is a helpful and devoted individual who is willing to sacrifice himself for the sake of his friend. If I were to rescue him, it would give him a chance to help more people who are in need. Even though he insults Shylock as well, a human cannot be perfect, therefore he is the best character in the play in my opinion, thus I would save him.

Activity 2 - Global Warming
2. Singaporeans can play an active role in saving the planet by using the 3Rs, namely reduce, reuse and recycle. Besides this, there are also campaigns which are set up to inform citizens about the importance of going green, such as NTUC Fairprice’s initiative of going green by encouraging shoppers to purchase reusable bags from their franchise which will reduce the need to use plastic bags which are non-biodegradable. Singaporeans can also do their part at home by using energy-efficient appliances, rice water to water plants, water from washing machine to clean their toilets et cetera. In this way, they can truly know the importance of going green and that they can indeed play a part in it.
3. In HCI, we can organize competitions, especially quizzes which will appeal more to the students such as a Fact or Fantasy quiz, which will test the abilities of students to identify the facts about global warming and effects of going green. A CCA such as gardening and environmental activists can be set up and this will enable the students to know more about global warming and what we can do to curb it. If these CCAs cannot attract enough students, then this can be made into a compulsory part of the curriculum, such that it can engage all students.
Diary Entry
I cannot believe that I have done such a thing – to allow my sister to drive! She is now arrested, and a criminal record can never be erased! Why should women be arrested for driving in this kingdom? The law which bars women from driving is simply ridiculous! My sister wanted to fight for the rights of women under this oppressive rule, and of course as her brother, I ought to support her, thus yesterday I decided it was appropriate for her to be at helm and accompanied her onto the streets to protest. However, a great commotion ensued and we were soon surrounded by police. In the end, perplexingly, they arrested my sister but let me off! I just cannot understand. Why is my country so prejudiced against women? Women are definitely as able as men!
As I calmed down and reflected upon the incident, I could not help but question why Saudi Arabia bars women from driving, while other countries do not. Religion certainly was the greatest factor, but in terms of religion, most countries in the Middle East have Islam as their official religion. This only succeeds in proving the absurdity of this law because those countries do not bar women from driving! Why is my country so unique and much more oppressive than others? I just cannot understand!
Now, I am facing an increasing doubt of faith in my religion. I even thought of going against the government. However, what position am I in to do so? It will only result in a similar outcome which is failure, am I right? I am saddened and frustrated over the fact that nothing can be done to achieve equality in the country. I am now at a loss, but I must not collapse for I will have to bail her out later. I must put on a strong front to cheer her up amidst adversities, but I am struggling to accomplish that! Please tell me what to do! Please!
Activity 1 - Women's Rights
2. I believe that the use of social media has been an advantage to the women in Saudi Arabia because it allows messages to be propagated and received by a much larger audience. In this way, the women in Saudi Arabia can garner support of people around the world, which will aid in the changing of certain policies which deprive rights of Saudi women or even the abolishment of certain laws which are deemed prejudicial. This can be seen from the fact that Ms Sharif managed to garner the support of 12000 people on her Facebook page. The government and religious leaders will then be pressured into making changes so as to appease the majority of the population.
3. The problem of women’s rights in Saudi Arabia can be solved by involving both the government and religious leaders when putting laws in place. When making laws, they should look from both the humanitarian and religious points of view and make sure they do not clash. Both parties should also reach a consensus before passing a law and consider the possible consequences it may result in. rights of women be secured. Lastly, they should be aware of the fact that laws are flexible, not absolute and changes should be made to them when necessary. Only then can this problem be solved.

Reflection On Research
There is indeed a huge difference between the Elizabethan Era and the world we live in today. Back then, there was a hierarchy, which meant that everyone at any level of society was very likely to remain there forever, so would his/ her children. People could not easily rise to a high position of power through means such as education. Now, we can improve our social status by perseverance, hard work and attaining degrees, and the system of hierarchy is barely existent in our society. At that time, people often had mistaken beliefs and misconceptions. They lacked scientific knowledge, and only after the Renaissance did they start to seek for answers to questions on their own instead of relying on hearsay. For example, people back then believed that a sick person could be cured by having the ‘bad blood’ taken out of him using leeches, but ironically, instead of curing them, it led to their respective demises! We can prevent this from happening because in the world today, we have sufficient knowledge of the sciences and remedies to such illnesses.
Even though Shakespeare’s works were produced in the 1600s, his works are still highly relevant and can be applied to modern day context. Some of the examples are his quotes, racism and Christian teachings. Most of Shakespeare’s quotes, such as “Love is blind; and lover cannot see” are still widely used today. As for the topic of racism, it is still existent in the world that we live in, and we can do our best to prevent being racist against others. The Christian teachings in the Merchant of Venice can still be used today to remind people of the right moral values that they should possess. Therefore it is evident that Shakespeare’s works are still relevant to the modern day context.

Peer Pressure: A Drive Or Deterrent?
People tend to adopt the notion that peer pressure is negative because the phrase comprises of the word ‘pressure’. However, they have yet to fully explore the impacts of peer pressure. Peer pressure actually has positive impacts on both an individual and a group. In school, peer pressure never fails to bring students in a class together as it promotes competitiveness amongst them, which provides them with the drive to work hard and perhaps surpass and outclass their classmates. This competitiveness is the direct opposite of the normal forms of competitiveness. It is special because it does not result in animosity but instead promotes friendship and strengthens bonds among the students. In this case, peer pressure is converted into a drive towards success. Peer pressure can also lead a person who has gone astray back onto the right path. If one were to make good friends, one will be influenced positively and his/her friends can help him/her discern right from wrong. They can be one’s beacons and guide one back onto the correct path, which shows the bright side of peer pressure.
However, do not picture peer pressure as something that is perfect. It has got a myriad of cons as well. Teenagers are undergoing puberty, and they struggle to curb their curiosity most of the time, which renders them vulnerable to all kinds of peer pressure, especially the negative side of it. Statistics have shown that about twenty percent of teenagers have tried smoking and an astonishing sixty-six percent, smoking, which shows that they cannot resist the temptations that negative peer pressure has brought to them and succumb to them far too easily. They can even be willing to compromise their moral values because they are afraid of losing their friends or being ostracized, thus succumbing to peer pressure. Besides this, negative peer pressure can also result in depression. When people laugh at an individual for not doing well in his/her test for example, he/she may not be able to take the insults and transform them into drive. Instead, he/she could dwell in despair for a long time. In extreme cases, the target can even commit suicide! This highlights the grave consequences and impacts that negative peer pressure can bring about.
Personally, I feel that peer pressure is actually positive rather than negative because it can bring out the best qualities out of a person. If a person is able to transform negative peer pressure into positive peer pressure, it will serve as an incessant drive to propel that person towards success. Those who are affected by negative peer pressure can share their troubles with their friends and allow them to guide them back onto the right path.
So, how should peer pressure be dealt with? There are actually many ways to deal with peer pressure. I believe that schools can invite speakers who are experienced in counselling who are able to address the students more about how to deal with peer pressure, such as setting the preservation of their moral values as their priority before they start doing something and bringing out qualities such as determination amidst peer pressure. People should also learn to convert negative experience into positive drive to achieve their goals and focus on doing what is right.
After all this debating, to conclude, I believe that peer pressure has got its pros and cons. In the end, it all boils down to how you deal with it. Peer pressure. A drive. Or a deterrent? You decide!

Letter To Survivor Of Japanese Earthquake
I'm a concerned member of the public in Singapore, and I'm deeply saddened by the massive destruction dealt to Japan. Tremors are prevalent in Japan, but an astonishing 8.9 magnitude earthquake and a horrifying tsunami which struck Japan on 11 March stunned the entire world. The massive destruction was indescribable, and the seemingly imminent meltdown of the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant would only worsen the situation. The scene where waves, choked with cars, whole burning houses and debris, proceeded to consume everything in its path sent shivers down my spine. I have also received news about the loss of your children, and I hope to offer my deepest condolences through this letter, as well as to provide you with new-found strength to pull through the ordeal.
Even though I've never experienced such natural disasters or the loss of loved ones, I'd like to stress that you get over this heartbreaking experience and live your life normally as soon as possible. I know it's hard to accomplish that feat, especially when you're grieving. I can imagine your anguish and despair as well, but what will happen if you were to drown yourself into it perpetually? Is that going to help the situation? No! Your children wouldn't want to see your tear-stricken self! Relish the wonderful prospects in life, so that you will know how much life is worth. So, be strong, and you'll be able to overcome future obstacles.
Remember, you're not alone. The whole world is behind you and your nation. Stay strong so that you can help your fellow countrymen as well. Let time heal your wounds, and may your nation rise again.
All the best.
Best wishes,
Your constant pillar of support

Blended Learning (Article 1)
Assumption:
The author of the article assumed that the readers are unaware of the current trend of the increasing number of teenagers going for plastic surgeries. He also assumes that low costs of the plastic surgeries, increasing self-consciousness and media awareness have led to the increase. Teenagers nowadays care too much about their looks and are willing to change despite the procedures being fraught with risks.
Question at issue:
The question at issue is the worrying sign of teenagers focusing much more on the importance of their looks and are willing to go under the knife despite it being risky. The trend is really worrying as youths are now focusing excessively on their looks and are willing to improve them at all costs. They are willing to spend money and there is a potential of more youths who will decide to undergo plastic surgery, despite being minors.
Point of view:
The author adopts the point of view of the main society to look at the worrying trend of teenagers going under the knife, which allows him/her to view the phenomenon without any prejudice. Readers will also agree with the author as he/she has written the article from their point of view. They can also understand the article better. Messages such as the fact that the thinking of youths has to be changed can also be better conveyed. The author is basically taking a neutral stand.
Consequences:
The consequences of the publishing of this article is that when the readers read it, they will be aware of this worrying phenomenon of youths going under the knife and they may react differently. There could be an upheaval, but the readers who are parents themselves would be able to counsel their children (youths) and warn them about the risks of undergoing plastic surgery, and this worrying trend could be stopped prematurely and gradually. Youths who read this article may adopt the wrong thinking of other youths and be exceptionally self-conscious and decide to undergo plastic surgery as well.
Movie Review - Amazing Grace
The parts which struck me greatly were when a slave showed William and his friends the scars which were the result of shackles and whips inflicted onto him. The scars were really deep and horrifying. Another example was when William led some of the royals to the harbour and asked them to stand near a ship which was used to ferry slaves, covering extremely long distances. Majority of the slaves died and their corpses were not disposed of, and William Wilberforce ordered the royals and several ministers to smell the stench, so that they would know the detrimental impacts of slave trade. They burst into tears and repented. It was also stated that every single bag of sugar was the result of bloodsheds and sweat.
I enjoyed watching the movie as I was really impressed with William Wilberforce and his determination to succeed and put an end to slave trade in the UK despite all odds. He hollered in the parliament to prove and reinstate the fact that an end to slave trade was necessary and had to be carried out immediately. An owner of a slave ship also wept and repented his mistakes. He witnessed the harsh treatment and deaths of countless slaves for 20 years, and he felt as if the souls of those dead slaves were haunting him.
I strongly recommend this movie to all, especially those who love to seek for righteousness and justice!

ACE Activity - Describing People
Paul shot a menacing glare at the mirror and seemed ready to spit venom. He clenched his fists as his face turned crimson with anger and frustration. He swept the dandruff off his scalp and stared at the obese youth with a face full of acne in the mirror. Paul looked down at his checkered shirt which had so many stitches which concealed its scars. He sighed. He loathed his gait, his pockmarked face, and the fact that he was ostracised in school due to his size. His gaze transfixed on the mirror, in vain. He detested those who were better than him in academics, in sports, in aesthetics, in everything. Why couldn't he slim down after so many futile attempts? Why couldn't he walk properly instead of hobbling? Why couldn't he excel in a single aspect? His efforts had gone down the drain. Indignant, he let out a thunderous roar, mixed with emotions, and his voice threatened to tear down his house. He wanted to weep, hoped to get out of his miseries and longed to change, but he just couldn't. His lips trembled and the veins on his fists protruded. Hatred eventually proved to be too overwhelming, and he threw a punch at the reflection, determining to knock it down, into smithereens that could never be glued back again. The mirror did shatter into a myriad of minute fragments, but his miseries did not come to an end. There was no change, and sadly, he remained as what he had always been...
ACE Activity - Describing People
Dear Diary,
It had been a rather long and hectic day for me today. We were ordered by the guards to get off our beds by 6, and had a simple but healthy breakfast, which consisted of milk and a slice of dehydrated bread, which I forced through my oesophagus. After breakfast, we were led out of the cells, and that was the thing which I looked forward to every morning. No one could endure the lengthy duration which we inmates had to be confined in dark cells, completed with four concrete walls which emanated gloom and dampened our spirits. Today, we were delegated the jobs of cleaning the toilets and gathering fallen leaves into piles. We had to attach hoses to taps, and needed to do it ourselves. We had to carry out the orders issued by the guards. No question, just obey their orders, or else we would have no chance of being paroled. The repulsive stench which emitted from the cisterns forced me to pinch my nose in disgust, but there was no room for rebuttance. Afterwards, we had to rake the leaves and transform them into mountainous piles. That was hard work as the leaves were scattered everywhere. Besides, the wind established itself as our greatest enemy that say, thus we had to rake again and again. However, I tried to concentrate on carrying out my task as much as I could, as the lunch hour approached. Lunch comprised of a small packet of milo and a sandwich, which was barely enough to suppress my hunger pangs. I continued raking till darkness loomed, and we were ordered to shower, eat our dinner and return to our respective cells. I managed to complete another chapter of Closer, a book from the Tunnels series! At 10, I meditated in my cell and thought about my family. How I longed to see them soon. I shrugged off that notion as the guards ordered us to bed.
Bye, Diary, my sole companion!
Love,
Thomas

ACE Activity - Describing Scenes
Waves resembling sapphires roared and crashed against the rocks along the shores, retrieving barnacles before gradually ebbing away. Coconut palms lined the shore, their leaves swaying in the wind with delight. The white sand beneath my feet looked so pure, and felt so soft, so soothing. Digging my calloused feet into the sand, it seemed a remedy concocted specially to alleviate my troubles as they gradually vanished into thin air. I glanced at the sky, which was now turning violet. The sun was a pale orange disc suspended in the horizon and shrouded in the clouds, splashed with a stunning array of shades of magenta and orange. The salty smell of the evening breeze wafted through my nostrils as I took a deep breath. As I watched, the sun seemed to bade a farewell reluctantly as it faded slowly below the distinct horizon. Soon, the sun vanished completely, and the sky was replaced with shades of violet, signally darkness' loom. The tide seemed to crash against the rocks more violently as they could do nothing to prevent the departure of the sun. It subsided gently, mourning the setting of the sun as darkness lurked.
ACE Activity - Describing Scenes
Upon accomplishing the feat of boarding the MRT train, I found myself sandwiched helplessly between two youths. My sweat-stricken arms were tucked closely to my body as I gasped for breath. It was in the evening, and as I scanned the carriages, I realised that the train was packed with people from all walks of life, ranging from uniform-clad students who were busy wiping off beads of perspiration on their foreheads, to businessmen who were returning to their domiciles after a hectic day at work. As the train gradually garnered pace, ear-piercing screams engulfed the train as many were unable to maintain their balance. As a result, they fell on unfortunate commuters around them, who could not react in time, thus acted as cushions. This was followed by sincere apologetic mumbles and angry complaints, while the faces of some twisted in agony. Some stuffed fanciful earpieces into their ears and swayed their heads to the rhythm of the heavy metal music, gesticulating spontaneously. In contrast, some commuters closed their eyes and swayed lifelessly like drunkards, accompanied by their snores. Several passengers attempted to stay awake and rubbed their bloodshot eyes incessantly. In the corner, loud chatters among students emanated, and commuters shot glares of ire towards them, who seemed to be engrossed in their conversations, thus were in complete oblivion to the phenomenon. My eyelids now seemed to weigh a ton as I wondered when I would arrive home.

Extract from To Kill a Mockingbird
'But there is one way in this country in which all men are created equal - there is one human institution that makes a pauper the equal of a Rockefeller, the stupid man the equal of an Einstein, and the ignorant man the equal of any college president. That institution, gentlemen, is a court. It can be the Supreme Court of the United States or the humblest J.P. court in the land, or this honourable court which you serve. Our courts have their faults, as does any human institution, but in this country our courts are the great levellers, and in our courts all men are created equal.
'I'm no idealist to believe firmly in the integrity of our courts and in the jury system - that is no ideal to me, it is a living, working reality. gentlemen, a court is no better than each man of you sitting before me on this jury. A court is only as sound as its jury, and a jury is only as sound as the men who make it up. I am confident that you gentlemen will review without passion the evidence you have heard, come to a decision, and restore this defendant to his family. In the name of God, do your duty.'
1) From Atticus' speech, what can you tell about the jurors in the jury? Quote the evidence from the extract to support your answer.
2) Why did Atticus stress the fact that all men are created equal? You may quote the evidence from other parts of the book to support your answer.

Reflection On Prejudice
The lesson which Mrs Raj conducted was quite fascinating and interesting for me as she helped us to differentiate and explain prejudice, discrimination and stereotypes.
I was confused with the terms at first, but after Mrs Raj explained them in detail using the powerpoint, I could understand them much better. Firstly, prejudice is the thought or opinion towards a group of people without having the facts straight, while discrimination is the act of ostracisation towards a group of people which was caused by prejudice. Lastly, stereotypes are generalisations applied on groups of people simply because of an example by one or few persons in the group. We also came up with examples of prejudice, discrimination and stereotypes in our daily lives and we were surprised that some of them are actually what we had done, without knowing that they belonged to them.
In my opinion, I think prejudice, discrimination and stereotypes should not be applied against a population or an individual as they could easily affect a person or group's psychological being. They may think that they do not belong to the society, thus leading to further isolation. It is also likely for them to be treated unfairly by others. The worst thing is that they were deprrived of chances to explain themselves most of the time, so their opinions and feelings will be bottled up. I hope that all of us can look from the perspectives of the targets of prejudice, discrimination and stereotypes, so that we will be able to better understand their detrimental effects, and then avoid carrying them out.
